Objective
To design assets for a game location from concept art.
Process
As an illustrator and concept artist stepping into the gaming industry, I understood quite well that it was necessary for me to learn to develop game assets. However, I was without a world to create assets for. So, I conceptualized Silent Falls; an area with large, glowing mushrooms instead of trees, and a blue color scheme. When thinking of how this world would function, I decided that it would only be habitable at night. If you did not sleep when the sun came up, danger would await you. Now that I had my plan settled, I opened up Clip Studio Paint and began painting. I put focus into the colors and texture of the mushroom trees, hoping to make it feel like a living, breathing forest through lighting and atmosphere. Now that I had the concept art, I moved onto the game assets for silent falls. I decided to create a typical mushroom tree, and a tree that has sprouted new, additional mushrooms. When sketching, I found myself inspired by real life mushrooms that dripped from the edge and gills. From there, I designed a nectar that dripped from these mushrooms that nearby fauna would eat and rely on to survive. I believed this helped further develop the world I was building. Once the sketches for both concepts were done, I painted and rendered them, focusing on making them feel as complete and game ready as possible, while still taking major inspiration from my concept artist. The final result has a mysterious, moody atmosphere, that is simultaneously peaceful and relaxing to look at.
